PLACES TO SEE
The Little Mermaid
In 1974, the Progressive Danes of Kimballton bought a mermaid statue sculpted in cold cast bronze by two college students in Modesto, CA. This statue is a replica of the famous Little Mermaid that stands in the Copenhagen harbor and honors the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale "The Little Mermaid". For twenty years, The Little Mermaid statue sat on her rock. As she started to deteriorate, new funds were solicited to have her recast in bronze. In 2008, the statue and the Hans Christian Andersen Park were rededicated during Kimballton's Quasquicentennial Celebration. The Little Mermaid Park also includes the Audubon County Freedom Rock.
Troy Muller, Art Director of New Century Art Guild in Kimballton, designed and created eight sculptures based on short stories written by Hans Christian Andersen. The beautiful new sculptures now enhance the Kimballton garden surrounding The Little Mermaid. Marne & Elk Horn Telephone Company provides a call-in service where visitors can dial 712-773-4267 (HANS) to listen to a menu and hear a 3 minute synopsis of each fairytale themed sculpture.
